Please Note: Cruise-Australia is a non-commercial and privately owned cruise site and not connected with any cruise company or agency. Although the author has worked in the passenger shipping industry since 1960 yet is now semi-retired, but has continued to write cruise and ship reviews as well as articles in order to better to inform cruise and ship enthusiasts and provide information for those intending a cruise in the future.

The aim of Cruise Australia.com and it associate site Cruise-Australia.net is to provide an informative and comprehensive cruise sites that will assist you to make an informative choice on ships and cruises that are available from Australia, New Zealand as well as from other regions around the world. The author is sure that you will find something suitable on the many pages online. There will be something for those who are planning their very first cruise vacation or those regular passengers, be it for a shorter cruise or a line voyage to or from the United Kingdom. It also caters for the senior cruiser, the younger set and families. Thus make sure that you read this site very carefully and also check the many cruise reviews, for it will assist you in making up your mind in what is best to suit your needs, Once you have chosen the ship or company of choice, all I can say is … Bon Voyage! As you head on your ocean adventure and explore exciting and new destinations, but always remember, when you come back home, it will always be the wonderful time you had on board the chosen cruise ship that will have you raving about to one and all, for the service and excellent food is that good, let alone the top quality entertainment that you would pay around $100 plus for every single night, and guess what, everything is included in your fare, except for drinks and optional excursions and should you wish to participate in any optional facilities, such as deluxe optional restaurants, that is if they are available on many ships.

A Note from the author: I sincerely wish to thank my many regular readers who may be from Australia, New Zealand as well as from Asia, and around the world, for this site has become so well accepted all over the world! I certainly greatly appreciate your kindness, the many visits as well as the countless emails with your most generous comments. As always, I greatly appreciate receiving the many comments and cruise reviews that I have been receiving over the years. Although I have not been able to use every single one, but some have made it online, however they have certainly assisted me in forming and confirming my own thoughts having cruised with the majority of companies that I have commented on, considering that I have now been on 130 voyages/cruises to date and I have just returned on my last cruise on the Holland America Line ms Oosterdam in February 2013. I must thank my millions of readers for your ongoing support over so many years as we have now almost reached the 500 million readers mark and I am simply amazed at that number! However, I thank all the new and first time visitors and I trust that you will have found what you are looking for, but should you have a question, all you have to do is - ask. Remember, as this is a 100% non commercial site and I am not connected to any of the cruise companies, and I do not receive any commissions, in addition I do pay my fares for all my cruises, unlike other cruise reviewers who travel for free and thus say very much what the promo packs they receive from the cruise companies give them contain, whilst I prefer to stand firm on my personal integrity and I simply tell the truth, even if at times I happen to be a little too truthful and say it just as it is! But I believe you should know the facts without any favouritism and that is how it should be and I am sure you would want it that way!

This page has a feature (via a link) that offers a complete list of all ships that are based in Australia during 2013 & 2014, as well as those here during our summer months!

ms Oosterdam 2013 Ship & Cruise Review

By Reuben Goossens

The author undertook a 14 night cruise from Sydney to Auckland cruise departing on February 6, 2013 on the ms Oosterdam. Many who will read this, I know you will have a chuckle, for I had said quite some time ago, that “I would never set a foot on a Vista Class Ship!” So, I decided to go and see why I disliked this class so much, and if this voyage would change my mind at all? Well you will have to read the review to find out the answer to that question! But, there is no doubt her interiors are simply Holland America Line’s traditional beautiful self, and I loved her superb Art works fresh flowers everywhere and brilliant décor. As always food is simply sublime, and still the best of any cruise line I have ever been on in my 130 voyages to date! And service onboard is simply splendid host of the finest Indonesian stewards in the dinning rooms and Filipino Stewards in the bar and drinks sections on board. The service is 5 Star indeed! Now go and read the review and see the ship though my camera lens!

-d-SPECIAL FEATURE-d-

“Ships that Call Australia Home”

Ships that are based here both fulltime, or for the Summer Months.

All ships are listed in this Special Feature!

The MV Celebrity Solstice is the largest ship based in Australian waters during the summer months, although the MV Queen Mary 2 will be the largest when she visits

This huge ship has just 2,850 passengers. Compare that to the 88-500-ton Radiance of the Seas, which has just 170 less passengers, yet she is a massive 33,500-ton smaller

Australian’s are certainly very fortunate for the cruise industry has grown so much over the years that we are indeed spoilt for choice for now we have anything form budget to luxury to the ultimate of super luxury ships operating from our shores!

Let us be honest, it was not that long ago that Australia had just one cruise ship based here and that was the Sitmar Line, later to become P&O’s TSS Fairstar, she was sold to the breakers as the popular “Funship” slowly wore out, and she was replaced by another ex Sitmar/P&O-Princess ship the P&O TSS Fair Princess. She cruised on for many good and happy years, but in due course was sold to Asian interests to become a cruising casino. Next came another ex Sitmar ship, being the last ever steam passenger ship ever to be built the superb and modern, now a Princess ship which was refitted to become the Pacific Sky. It was at this time P&O Cruises Australia commenced to expand and they obtained two further Carnival Ships that became the Pacific Sun and the Pacific Star. Both the Sky and Star were sold and these were replaced by ex Princess ships of almost 70,000 tons, the Pacific Dawn and then the Pacific Jewel, later followed by the delightful Pacific Pearl.

With the departure from our waters of the Pacific Sun in July, 2012, the Carnival cooperation & PLC/P&O Cruises now have the three good budget ships in operation, as well as their Princess Cruises having two ships the Dawn Princess and Sea Princess, whilst Carnival Cruises have established their own product her with the 88,500-ton Carnival Spirit to Australia having received an extensive refit to make her suitable for our market!

Thus in all, as from November 2012 we will have six full time cruise ships based in Australia, and the lowest tonnage of these is the Pacific Pearl that is 63,706-ton however actual size wise, she is longer in length and wider than her two 70,000-ton sisters Pacific Dawn and Jewel. The Dawn Princess and Sun Princess are 77,000-ton each, whilst the Carnival Spirit is 88,500-ton. Just imagine the days when we used to think that the Fairstar so lovingly known as the “FunShip” was big, yet she was a mere 23,764-ton. That means, instead of around 24,000-tons based in Australia year round until she left for the breakers in February in 1997, today we have six big luxurious big ships totalling some 446,801 tons and that is a huge increase.

MV Voyager of the Seas offers over 137,276 tons and packed full of luxury and facilities beyond belief!

She will be cruising from Sydney Australia during the summer months of 2012/13 & 2014.

There is no doubt that countless Australian and New Zealander’s have taken to the idea of going on an ocean cruise for the figures have proven that passenger’s numbers have proved that reservations and actual passengers that have sailed are ever increasing.

In addition to the six permanent ships based in Australia there are a large number of major International Cruise Companies over the past years have been sending their finest and largest ships to our shores! Australia is most fortunate indeed as now we have a fleet of some excellent ships based in Australia year round, but also many superb luxury ships that are based here during the summer cruise season from October through to April.

The much loved ms Rotterdam

There is a host of superb companies and those that have something to offer all markets, be it the upmarket luxury style of cruising, the family market, or the value for money. Top of the market is Holland America Lines (HAL) has the ms Oosterdam, the more intimate ms Volendam and the wonderfully popular ms Rotterdam. These are the ultimate ships that offer the finest service, cuisine and entertainment, and Holland America is also the oldest company in the mix, being well over 140 years in the business! However HAL does offers some excellent value fares and they should not be thought of as being too expensive! The Oosterdam will spend most of its time cruising the Pacific and New Zealand, whilst the Volendam will offer a number of specialised voyages, such as a circumnavigation of Australian and a superb of Asian voyages from Australia to Singapore of Hong Kong, as well as cruises from Hong Kong and Singapore. The ms Rotterdam will sail in January 2014 from Rotterdam Holland via Southampton and the Suez Canal to Singapore on an amazing 51 day expedition voyage, after which she will operate a most fascinating series of cruise of Indonesia. See the ms Rotterdam feature below for further details.

For a Holland America Line cruise brochure or for more information on their superb cruises from Australia or throughout the world, consult a cruise specialist, who is a travel professional or in Australia call Holland America Line at 1300 987 322 or visit www.hollandamerica.com.au.

Then there is another luxury line and that is Celebrity Cruises, the next is Royal Caribbean International Cruises that operate three ships. And the list does go on. Of course other companies include Cunard, Seabourn, Silversea, P&O UK, Orion Expedition Voyages and more! I suggest that you read this feature for there is so much more!

--Featured Ship--

ms Rotterdam

The 5 Star deluxe ms Rotterdam is one of the most elegant and intimate cruise ships afloat!

She is seen here at anchor, providing a regular tender service to an exotic Island – note the specially designed doors

The superb 59,885-ton ms Rotterdam was the first of the four R-Class of ships, and she is indeed a very special ship and has become one of the most popular ships in the Holland America Line (HAL) fleet. What makes all HAL ships stand apart from all other mainline cruise ships is that they will always operate with fewer passengers on their ships, and have in general at least one crew member per two passengers. That is a considerable improvement to other ships off the same size! In addition, service onboard HAL is simply unparalleled, for their superb Indonesian dinning room and cabin staff is not just genuinely friendly, but super efficient and always so helpful, for they cannot do enough for you! The drink and beverage staff is all Filipino and they also are carefully selected and do an amazing job. I recently returned from a HAL cruise of New Zealand and I gave the serving crew onboard the ms Oosterdam an overall rating of 9 out of 10, which is something I do not give easily! Considering that I gave Cunard MVB Queen Mary 2, a rating of 7.

All HAL ships are blessed having wide teak full walk around Promenade Decks, and whilst she cruises in certain regions the bow section is opened up to passengers, which is quite unique to Holland America. All her passenger decks are serviced by 10 elevators (lifts) and you will discover a host of magnificent lounges and bars as well as the multi level Theatre/Showroom, four Restaurants, 2 Pools, the middle one having a huge glass sliding roof for cooler climes, and at the top of the ship far forward the popular Crow’s Nest! The Atrium just has to be seen to believed, as it has an amazing grand elaborate Clock, the the two main faces there are signs of the Zodiac and the movements of the Planets, as well as clocks with the times of countries around the world. The clock was based on a 17th.century Flemish model and was designed for the ms Rotterdam by Frans Dingemans, The Netherlands. It was made by Gilbert Lebigre and Corrine Roger in Italy 1986.

Art onboard HAL ships is a major feature for you will be able to stroll around the ship and be delighted as you will discover piece after piece, but The “Terracotta Warriors” are a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funeral art that was buried with the Emperor in 210–209 BC with the purpose being to protect him in his afterlife. The figures, obviously dating from the third century BC, were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong District, Xi’an, Shaanxi province. And now we can see these figures, although these are copies of the original, but they are fascinating to view just the same, for they are so real!

These marvellous statues are located aft on Upper Promenade Deck between the Explorer’s Lounge & the Explorations Café

The two desks seen are used by the future cruise manager

Two Public Venues onboard ms Rotterdam.

The Explorer’s Lounge is very elegant and in the evening “Adagio” plays Classical music

Several terracotta warriors can just be seen on the left

The superb Crow’s Nest and bar is popular for so many reasons, peaceful by day, entertainment at night

I highly recommend that you look into the following cruises and extended voyages, for the ms Rotterdam will sail on January 8, 2014 fro Rotterdam Holland via Southampton (Jan 9) and the Suez Canal to Singapore on an amazing 51 days “Collectors’ Voyage” that includes and amazing round trip of Indonesia, including Komodo Island and so many others! This is a voyage beyond belief and is not to be missed! She will operate the same return voyage from Singapore to Southampton (52 days) or to Rotterdam (53 days) on March 14, 2014.

Whilst she is in Singapore, the Rotterdam will operate three superb 14 day cruises visiting Semarang, Bali (overnight), Lombok, Komodo Island, Makassar, Probolinggo, Surabaya and back to Singapore. The two “Collectors’ Voyages” to and from Rotterdam or the UK, as well as the three cruises from Singapore come highly recommended! Thus there is a great need to book VERY EARLY!
